XCEL Energy Rocks!

The Rocky Mountain Raptor Program has received a $5,000 grant from Xcel Energy to enhance and expand its environmental education program to schools throughout Colorado.

The agency’s (K-12) Environmental Education for Youth Program reaches over 15,000 students per year and teaches the importance of preserving wildlife and wild places for future generations.

“In addition to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing nearly 300 birds of prey each year, school and community education is an important mission of our agency,” states Judy Scherpelz, RMRP Director. “Our program for students has developed an excellent reputation throughout the state.”

RMRP education staff travel to schools, often accompanied by live birds of prey. “Students have a rare opportunity for up-close views of hawks, owls and other raptors, adds Carin Avila, RMRP Education Director. “I work closely with teachers to make certain our classroom presentations coordinate with local curriculum. Our gift from Xcel will help supplement program and travel expenses.”

The grant was issued through Xcel’s corporate giving program. In 2011, the company contributed nearly $4 million in focus area grants to organizations across its eight-state service area which includes Colorado.
